I only knew Steve briefly, over the past three years selling my art on cruise ship days at the Seaport Market. My space has been directly across from Steve-o-reno’s Cappucino. Whenever Steve was around, the day became somehow more lively. He always showed interest in how our day was going and had a joke or amusing story to tell. One day when I asked him where he was from, he said Washington state and I mentioned that I had been to Wenatchee. He brightened up at that and started to tell me about Lake Chelan and his childhood there. I had been very impressed by the Wenatchee area with the dry grassy valleys and apple orchards on the tops of the plateaus, with water being pumped up from the Columbia River below, so I was fascinated that Steve had actually grown up in such a magical area and actually worked in nearby apple orchards. What a small world - and what an idyllic childhood! Steve had a genuine interest in people - his kindness showed even in his ‘What can I get you?’ greeting to his customers. He would always ask people where they were from.
I will miss him very much this season. My thoughts are with you Rita, and all the family,
